Pro forma invoice

Pro forma invoice

Pro forma invoice is a commercial document that is issued prior to the delivery of goods or services. It is not an accounting document, but a form of offer and announcement of a future transaction. It is not recognised in the accounts. A pro forma invoice serves to present the terms of sale, such as prices, payment terms, quantities and specifications of goods or services, to the customer before the actual invoice is issued. A pro forma invoice does not constitute a formal commitment to pay, but merely informs you of the details of the future transaction. It contains most of the information that is found on a regular invoice, such as the name and address of the seller and buyer, a description of the goods or services, prices, terms of delivery and payment. This type of invoice must be appropriately marked with the word 'proforma'.
